Interview with Lisa and Heather, Bloggers at Made in a Pinch
What's the name of your blog? What do you blog about?
Made in a Pinch is a joint blog between two friends (Lisa and Heather) who live across the country from each other.
Our blog is dedicated to making family life easier, healthier, and happier. We cover all aspects of family life while providing helpful tips, time-saving resources, recipes and so much more.
How long have you been blogging and what made you decide to start a blog?
We had the idea a while ago but didn't really get it going until February 2017. Lisa and I were college roommates and great friends but lost contact a bit after Heather moved from North Carolina and set down roots in Colorado. Our desire for staying in closer contact and learning from each other as we go through life was a major inspiration for Made in a Pinch.
How many children do you have? Ages? What do they think about you being a blogger?
Heather: I have 3 boys, ages 10 yrs, 8 yrs and 7 yrs. They think it's really cool that I'm a blogger, although they don't reeeeaallly know what that is. My oldest thinks it's super cool that I have an actual webpage that I make and maintain. He is constantly suggesting that I include various things on the blog as well as asking if certain things I'm doing (dishes I make, etc) will be on there. It's great! The other night as we were eating dinner, he looked at me and said “Mama, this is the best dinner ever! You should definitely put this on Made In A Pinch to share with other people!”
Lisa: My kids have no idea that I blog! I attribute part of that to their ages: I have a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy. I also primarily blog when the kids are asleep… The exception to this is food: on any Made in a Pinch food post I write, my kids (my little sous chefs) are always big helpers in making the recipes.
What's your favorite thing about blogging?
Heather: I am loving the opportunity to be creative and to share things that I've learned the hard way to help other people. I am also loving the chance to get to know other people through blogging – it's such a great community!
Lisa: I love being a stay-at-home mom but I have found that having young children can, at times, feel isolating. I’m very cognizant of sleep for the kids, so I’m home for naps and early bedtime. Blogging is my instant connection to others out there with similar interests. Our readers are awesome!
What's your least favorite thing about blogging?
Heather: I don't love self-promotion. I know that in order to be successful and to help other people, we have to get the word out about what we do. I don't love putting us out there to promote us to total strangers, but it's getting easier to do.
Lisa: Time, or the lack thereof. Every time I sit down to blog, I’m inevitably not doing something else: cleaning, planning something, cleaning, cooking, cleaning, etc. Moms are always juggling a ridiculous number of things and running a blog stretches us thinner.
What's your favorite blogging tool that you simply cannot go without and why?
Heather: I would have to say other bloggers are my favorite blogging tool – their experience, help, guidance, feedback, and relationships are crucial to our success as bloggers!
Lisa: The collaboration and partnership with Heather is my favorite tool; I can’t imagine blogging without her! We have so much fun brainstorming ideas for our avatar, problem-solving our own issues, and planning for the success of Made in a Pinch. It is invaluable to have a ‘blogging buddy’!
What's the best advice you would give to a mom looking to start her own mompreneur business?
Hang in there! It can feel so frustrating to put so much effort and time into something and not feel like it's going anywhere or growing. We are growing slowly, and some days I feel like we are peddling backward. However, when I stop and look back at our numbers, our growth in how we blog and our knowledge, I can see just how far we really have come. It's encouraging, even on those hard days.
Just for fun: If you were a beverage, which beverage would you be?
Heather: I would be a hot chocolate! It's so warm, comforting, and delicious – such a joy!
Lisa: In the heat of summer in NC, I would be a blackberry-ade. Imagine a lemonade or orangeade but substitute the citrus with blackberry juice. It’s delicious and refreshing and only exists in the summer, my favorite time of year!
