Interview with Ehrica, Blogger at Our Missional Family
What do you blog about?
I blog at ourmissionalfamily.com. My purpose is to help others find a joy-filled, peaceful and intentional life built on the solid foundation of Christ. This also includes helping busy moms try to live a more simple lifestyle. A few of the things you will find on our site includes; meal planning, home management, finances, spiritual growth, printables and so much more. We also have six challenges you can sign up for if you're looking for some personal growth.
How long have you been blogging and what made you decide to start a blog?
We began our blogging journey in January of 2017, but officially launched August 1st. When building a business it takes time. I hired a designer in January and enrolled in Elite Blog Academy, it took me until August to feel like I was actually ready to launch. It is so important to create a solid foundation for your business and that's what I took most of my time doing.
The creation of Our Missional Family was due to my husband and I realizing that we were focusing on too many of the wrong things. We needed to make a change, find a balance and really start to focus on the people that mattered most to us. We were living our lives by the world's standards and not God's.
How many children do you have? Ages? What do they think about you being a blogger?
We have 3 children, 2 boys ages 22 and 15 and a little girl who is 8. My entire family is so supportive of what I do, especially my husband (I call him my earthly rock, that's how wonderful he is). Our 22-year-old is busy working full-time and going to college so he doesn't have much time to devote to our blog but is extremely supportive. Our 15-year-old is great at editing our videos and helping to create printables (it's amazing how tech-savvy our teens are). And our youngest wants to start making recipes with mommy so we can put them on our youtube channel.
What's your favorite thing about blogging?
My degree is in teaching so I love being creative and educating others on things that would be beneficial in their lives. Blogging allows me to be as creative as I want. As a busy mom of three kids, I'm always looking for ways to simplify our lives. My most favorite section of our blog is the printables section. I love creating functional printables that help my readers solve a problem. I love giving them solutions! Whether it's a meal planning printable or a daily schedule printable. I want to help make my reader's lives just a little bit easier.
What's your least favorite thing about blogging?
The learning curve! I realized right away that anyone can start a blog. But you will eventually need to decide if you are blogging to grow a business or just as a hobby because there is a big difference! If you want to grow your blog into a business then it is crucial to create a solid foundation for your blog to grow, so it doesn't crumble later on. I am so grateful that I found Elite Blog Academy early on, it has really helped me create the strong foundation that I need.
What's your favorite blogging tool that you simply cannot go without and why?
Mailerlite! Mailerlite is a hidden gem. Throughout all of my research, I kept reading about how wonderful ConvertKit is (and I agree, it is wonderful). I was able to experience ConvertKit using a free 2-month free trial and it is a great service. However, since I was just starting my business I couldn't afford those extra monthly expenses. I was excited when I came across Mailerlite, it's free up to 1,000 subscribers. I used to use MailChimp but switched all of my email subscribers to Mailerlite and I couldn't be happier. Mailerlite is very similar to ConvertKit without the monthly fee. Perfect for anyone who is just starting out.
What's the best advice you would give to a mom looking to start her own mompreneur business?
Learn to block schedule your time. I came across block scheduling later in the game but it has been a sanity saver ever since. One thing most people don't realize about me is that I work a full-time position from home and also run Our Missional Family. While raising three kids and living a crazy busy life, block scheduling allows me to plan out my days by dividing it into chunks of time. Sometimes I have so many things to do that I don't know how I will manage. With block scheduling, that time is already planned for me each day so I'm able to get done what I need to.
Just for fun: If you were a beverage, which beverage would you be?
Hot tea! I am a big hot tea drinker. I love cool mornings when I can go out on my front porch and listen to the birds, drink hot tea and have quiet time with the Lord. It makes me feel cozy and peaceful. My favorite season is Fall and my favorite holiday is Christmas. So, I love to curl up with my family in front of our fireplace, drink hot tea and watch Christmas shows on the Hallmark channel. Yes, I'm a bit of a homebody. There's no other place I would rather be.
