Running a blog (whether it's part-time or full-time), while also being a full-time mom is an effort that can feel impossible at times.
There were many instances that I considered quitting my creative pursuits and simply focusing all my attention on “mommying”. But I knew in my heart that I needed a creative outlet. That's what running a blog is for me–a creative way for me to share my talents, passions, and interests with the world…and get paid to do it!
One of the things that inspired me to keep going was reading about other mompreneurs. Listening to their stories to hear why they started, where they struggled, and how they found success was just the dose of encouragement I needed to keep going.
In the spirit of inspiring more moms, I'm highlighting a different mompreneur and her story every Monday for the next few months.
These women are hardworking, amazing mamas who are balancing family life and creative business life. They are at varying levels with their blogging business. Some are just getting started. Some have been blogging for years.
Each mom offers a different perspective on what works (and doesn't work) for her when it comes to being a mompreneur.
Take a few minutes to read the mompreneur stories each week and find the inspiration you need to move forward with your own mompreneur journey! Be sure to check out the resources they recommend, take a closer look at their blogs, and signup for their mailing lists to keep in touch!
Meet Melissa Ricker, Founder of EngineeredMotherhood.com
What do you blog about?
I blog about productivity and work/life balance for working mothers! I am a strong believer that we shouldn't have to choose between our careers/businesses, family and ourselves. With a little intention, we can have all three. I provide strategies to work smarter (not harder), make better decisions, set up boundaries and gain clarity in order to make it happen!
How long have you been blogging and what made you decide to start a blog?
A little over a year. I started blogging because I struggled when I first became a mother. I struggled because I was overwhelmed with guilt for wanting to pursue my career while having a baby at home. I eventually left my corporate job, but I wasn't happy without a career. So I decided to build one to help other working mothers. I now own two successful businesses!
How many children do you have? Ages? What do they think about you being a blogger?
I have one son who is 21 months old (and another little boy on the way). He doesn't understand what I do yet, but he sure loves to sit with me and do Facebook lives and watch my webinars. He must be proud of me because he keeps pointing at the screen saying “my mama” with a smile 🙂
What's your favorite thing about blogging?
Not only do I get to help inspire other women who may be struggling like I was, but blogging is an outlet for all of my emotions and pent up energy.
What your least favorite thing about blogging?
I have a love/hate relationship with SEO. I love it because it brings me traffic, but I hate it because it isn't a lot of fun!
What's your favorite blogging tool that you simply cannot go without and why?
Tailwind for scheduling out my Pinterest posts. Pinterest brings in 96% of my traffic, and Tailwind allows me to spend less than an hour a week scheduling out pins.
What's the best advice you would give to a mom looking to start her own mompreneur business?
Spend some time getting really clear on what you want to do, who you want to help and why you want to do it. Knowing those three things will make your journey a lot easier and keep you motivated on rough days (because there will be a lot of rough days!)
Just for fun: If you were a beverage, which beverage would you be?
Definitely wine! I would want to help women relax after a long day (perhaps in a bubble bath). I also think I get better with age, just like a fine wine 🙂
